Haldia sits at the mouth of the Hooghly, about 120 km downriver from Kolkata, and it is a working port town — docks, a refinery, petrochemicals and the workshops that feed them. On DTDC routing it is a Z4 destination on the DNG service, priced off the West Bengal card.
Air is 2–3 days, as fast as this zone gets, while road freight is 6–7 days. Almost a week separates the tiers, so saving money here is a real decision rather than a formality: on slower lanes road freight is easy to accept because air is barely quicker, and that argument does not hold here.
What the money looks like: a kilogram is ₹415 by air and ₹484 by road, which means small parcels have no reason to go by road at all — the road tier bills a three-kilogram minimum, so a 500 g box costs the same ₹484 as a 3 kg one. Heavier is a different story: twenty-five kilos is ₹4,036 on the road against ₹6,481 in the air, nearly ₹2,450 saved for four extra days. Premium promises two days at ₹813 a kilo while Standard is already doing two to three, so it buys one day at best for twice the fare.
