A simple destination with one very hard line

Malaysia has long exempted goods arriving by air courier valued at RM 500 or less from import duty and sales tax at the border, which covers most ordinary family parcels. Above that the consignment is assessed on its declared value and duty and sales tax are charged to the recipient. Separately, goods bought from registered overseas online sellers now carry a low-value goods tax collected at the point of sale — that is a shopping rule rather than a courier one, but it explains why some parcels arrive already taxed. Thresholds move; treat this as the current position rather than a promise.

The hard line is narcotics. Malaysia treats drug trafficking as a capital matter and applies that seriously to anything arriving in the post. Nobody reading this intends to send drugs, but the practical lesson is real: never accept a sealed parcel from someone else to forward on, and never send a box whose contents you have not personally seen. We open and check what we pack, and we will not book a sealed package a third party handed you.

Beyond that the restricted list follows the pattern of a Muslim-majority country. Pork products and alcohol are prohibited, religious publications are screened and material seen as proselytising is refused, and obscene material is blocked. Vaping products are regulated and have moved between restricted and prohibited status in different states, so we do not book them. Medicines beyond a personal quantity fall under the health authority’s control, and traditional or herbal preparations are treated as medicines rather than food.

Addressing is straightforward: unit or house number, street, area, the five-digit postcode, the town and the state, plus a Malaysian mobile number. East Malaysia — Sabah and Sarawak — is served but sits on a separate customs territory from the peninsula, so tell us the state at booking rather than after.

Above the threshold: Import duty and sales tax, billed to the recipient
Absolutely prohibited: Narcotics, pork products, alcohol, obscene material

What can go to Malaysia

Everyday goods move easily. The refusals we see cluster around food, religious material and anything vape-related.

Allowed

  • Documents, certificates and legal papers
  • Clothing, textiles, handloom and handicrafts
  • Sealed dry vegetarian snacks and sweets with a printed label
  • Spices, coffee and dry mixes in unopened retail packaging
  • Books and stationery
  • Personal-quantity medicine in original packaging with the prescription

Restricted / prohibited

  • Liquids, perfumes, oils, gels and aerosols — outside what we book, anywhere
  • Anything containing pork, and alcohol in any form
  • Narcotics and controlled substances — a capital offence in Malaysia
  • E-cigarettes, vape devices and pods
  • Religious material intended for distribution
  • Fresh, chilled and dairy-based food
  • Obscene or politically sensitive publications
  • Currency, gold and undeclared valuables

We check what goes into every box we pack. If someone else has handed you a sealed parcel to send onward, we will need to open it — that is not distrust, it is how we keep both of us out of a Malaysian courtroom.

Who sends this way

What this route usually carries

Family and community parcels

Malaysia has a large, long-settled Indian community, and much of what we book is exactly what you would expect — clothing, sealed snacks, spices, festival items and documents moving between relatives.

Students

Books, clothing, sealed food and personal-quantity medicine to Malaysian universities. Keep medicine within personal quantity and send the prescription with it.

Documents and business samples

Contracts, certificates and small product samples to Malaysian counterparts. Below the RM 500 air courier threshold most personal-scale consignments avoid assessment; above it the declared value drives the bill.

FAQs

Bangalore to Malaysia — common questions

What is your rate to Malaysia?

We do not publish one. There is no international rate card behind this counter that would stay true, so every international consignment is quoted individually once we know the destination, the weight and the contents. That is the deliberate policy, and it is the reason the price you are told is the price you pay.

Who carries the shipment?

DTDC. We are an authorised DTDC booking partner and the parcel travels on a genuine DTDC air waybill through DTDC's overseas network.

Will my parcel be taxed?

Air courier consignments valued at RM 500 or less have long been exempt from import duty and sales tax at the border. Above that, duty and sales tax are assessed on the declared value and charged to the recipient.

Can I send Indian snacks and sweets?

Sealed, dry, factory-packed and labelled vegetarian items, yes. Nothing dairy-based, nothing homemade, and nothing containing pork or animal fat.

Someone asked me to forward a sealed package to Kuala Lumpur. Can you send it?

Not sealed and unseen. We will open and check it with you first. Malaysia treats drug trafficking as a capital offence and parcels are exactly how people get used. This is the one rule we will not make an exception to for anybody.

How long does it take?

We do not print a transit figure. You get the service commitment at booking along with the air waybill number to track it yourself.

What address details do you need?

House or unit number, street, area, the five-digit postcode, town, state and a Malaysian mobile number. Tell us if the destination is in Sabah or Sarawak — East Malaysia is a separate customs territory from the peninsula.
