We book Mauritius into DTDC's overseas network and work the price out per shipment; there is no international rate card behind this site and we will not invent a per-kilo figure. Two things are worth knowing before you pack: VAT applies even where customs duty does not, and Mauritius is an island, with the biosecurity rules that come with being one.
Imports are cleared by the Mauritius Revenue Authority. Mauritius has removed customs duty from a large share of tariff lines over the years, so many ordinary goods arrive with no duty at all — but VAT still applies at 15% on the customs value, and it is paid by the recipient on arrival. People are often told “there is no duty to Mauritius” and take that to mean nothing is payable. It does not.
The other constraint is biosecurity. Mauritius controls the entry of plants, seeds, cuttings, soil, fresh fruit and vegetables, and products of animal origin, and permits are required for categories that are admissible at all. Do not put anything living or fresh in a parcel. Sealed, factory-packed dry food with a printed ingredient list is the practical option, in personal quantities.
Everything else follows the ordinary rules. Write an itemised invoice — plain descriptions, quantity and a realistic value per line — because that document is what the MRA assesses. Mark a genuine gift as a gift. Under-declaring to save VAT invites a revaluation, which costs the recipient the tax anyway plus the delay.
