Courier from Bangalore to Australia

Parcels and documents from our HSR Layout counter to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and everywhere in between, booked on a DTDC air waybill. Australia is not a difficult destination for duty — it is a difficult destination for biosecurity, and that distinction decides whether your parcel arrives or is destroyed.

Australian border rules

Duty is the easy part. Biosecurity is not.

On the customs side Australia is comparatively relaxed for personal parcels: goods valued at AUD 1,000 or less generally clear without a formal import declaration and without customs duty at the border. Above that figure a formal entry is required and duty and GST are assessed. So far, so ordinary.

The part that actually determines whether your parcel survives is biosecurity. Australia runs one of the strictest quarantine regimes in the world because it is an island continent with agriculture worth protecting, and the Department of Agriculture inspects incoming mail aggressively. Items that are perfectly legal to own are routinely seized and destroyed at the border, with no compensation and often a fee charged to the recipient.

The categories that get destroyed most often in parcels from India are these: seeds of any kind, including the decorative ones in a craft item; nuts, dried fruit and fresh produce; spices containing seed material where the packaging is not commercial and sealed; honey and bee products, which are prohibited outright; anything made of untreated wood, cane, bamboo or straw, including handicrafts and religious items; meat, dairy and egg products in any form; and soil, which includes the fine residue on a used item.

Everything of biosecurity interest must be declared on the invoice. Australia does not punish declaration — it punishes concealment. A declared packet of sealed commercial spice mix may well be released; the same packet undeclared can cost you the entire consignment.

Addressing is simple by comparison: unit number, street, suburb, the state or territory abbreviation, a four-digit postcode and an Australian mobile number. The suburb matters — many Australian street names repeat across a single metropolitan area.

Sender documents: Aadhaar or PAN, plus an itemised invoice
Customs threshold: AUD 1,000 — below it, no formal import declaration
Biosecurity: All food, plant, wood and animal-origin items must be declared
Prohibited outright: Honey, seeds, fresh produce, untreated wood and cane
Address: Unit, street, suburb, state code, four-digit postcode, mobile

  • Honey and bee products — prohibited outright
  • Nuts, dried fruit, fresh fruit and vegetables

If a handicraft has a wooden base or a seed bead on it, tell us. That one detail is the difference between a delivered parcel and a destruction notice.

Who sends this way

What this route usually carries

Students in Australian universities

Clothing, books, bedding, sealed snacks and medicine. The single most common mistake on student boxes is a home-packed food container tucked in by a parent as a surprise. It is the item most likely to be found, and it puts the entire consignment at risk.

Family parcels

Clothes, textiles and gifts to relatives in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Under AUD 1,000 these clear without a formal declaration, so the paperwork is light — provided nothing in the box is of biosecurity interest.

Wedding and festival clothing

Sarees, sherwanis and occasion wear travel well and raise no border questions. Watch for the trims: some bridal packaging uses dried flowers, rice or seed decoration, all of which are quarantine items.

Documents

Certificates, attested paperwork and originals for visa, study and employment purposes. The cleanest thing to send to Australia, with no quarantine dimension at all.

FAQs

Bangalore to Australia — common questions

How much will it cost?

We quote every international consignment individually. We hold no international rate card, and we would rather tell you that than publish a figure that falls apart at the counter. Send us weight, dimensions, destination postcode and contents for a firm number.

Who carries it?

DTDC. We are an authorised DTDC booking partner and your parcel travels on a genuine DTDC air waybill through DTDC's overseas network.

Can I send Indian snacks and sweets to Australia?

Only sealed, commercially packaged, clearly labelled vegetarian items — and they must be declared on the invoice. Nothing dairy-based, nothing homemade, no nuts or dried fruit. Australian biosecurity destroys undeclared food routinely.

Why was a previous parcel destroyed at the border?

Almost always one of three things: undeclared food, a seed or plant item, or untreated wood in a handicraft. Australia inspects incoming mail heavily and destroys quarantine-risk goods without compensation.

Will my relative pay duty?

Usually not, if the goods are worth AUD 1,000 or less — that clears without a formal import declaration. Above it, duty and GST are assessed and billed to the recipient.

How long does it take?

We do not print transit figures we cannot back. You get the service commitment at booking and the air waybill to follow it.

Can I send ayurvedic medicine?

Personal quantity, original sealed packaging, with the prescription, declared on the invoice. Australia's therapeutic goods rules are strict about herbal preparations, so keep quantities small and expect them to be looked at.

What address format does Australia use?

Unit number, street, suburb, state or territory abbreviation, four-digit postcode, and an Australian mobile number. Include the suburb — it is what distinguishes repeated street names across a city.
