Ask an Italian recipient for their codice fiscale before you book. Italy’s clearance process routinely wants the consignee’s tax code on an inbound consignment, including parcels addressed to private people, and a shipment that arrives without one waits while somebody chases it. It costs a WhatsApp message to collect in Bengaluru and days to collect once the box has landed.
Beyond that, Italy imports on the same terms as the rest of the Union — one tariff, one set of formalities, administered here by the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli. The rate of tax is Italy’s own, and at 22% it is the steepest standard IVA among the large EU markets, with a 4% band on books. Duty is normally not charged where the goods are worth under €150, and a genuine occasional gift between two private individuals is relieved of duty and tax up to €45. Below those thresholds you are relieved of some charges, never of the obligation to declare accurately — the low-value VAT exemption disappeared across the EU in 2021 and is not coming back.
Two Italian addresses are not, for customs purposes, in the EU at all. Livigno sits outside both the Union’s customs territory and its VAT area, and Campione d’Italia, the enclave on the Swiss side of Lake Lugano, is outside the VAT area. San Marino and Vatican City are separate jurisdictions again. If your parcel is going to any of these, say so — the paperwork is not the paperwork for Milan.

There is no per-kilogram answer we could give you honestly. The price turns on where in Italy it is going, on the billed weight — the scale reading or the volume figure, whichever comes out higher — and on what is in the carton. Send us those three and you will have a firm number within minutes.
We do not publish a transit figure for Italy. We have no verified record of our own for the route, and repeating a number off somebody else's marketing page would not make it true. The service you choose has its own commitment and we will state it at booking.
